Condition: Malaria
Plant: Ajuga remota
Malaria is a disease that is caused by a plasmodium parasite, that is spread to humans through infected female anopheles mosquito bites. It is a life-threatening disease. If not promptly treated, the infection can become severe and may cause kidney failure, seizures, mental confusion, coma, and finally death. Other conditions that arise as a result of malaria include anemia, and jaundice (yellow coloring of skin and eyes due to the loss of red blood cells.
Types and Causes of Malaria
The type of malaria depends on the type of parasites that cause the infection. There are 5 kinds of plasmodium parasites that can cause malaria in humans
- Plasmodium vivax
- Plasmodium ovale
- Plasmodium malariae
- Plasmodium falciparum- causes a more severe form of the disease and those who contract this form of malaria have a higher risk of death. An infected mother can pass the disease to her baby at birth and this is called congenital malaria
- Plasmodium knowlesi- Common in South East Asia in countries like Malaysia.
The most two common malaria are caused by plasmodium vivax and plasmodium falciparum. The plasmodium parasite can also be transmitted through:
- An organ transplant can also transmit malaria
- Blood transfusion
- Use of shared needles or syringes.

It can cause life-threatening complication which includes:
- Swelling of the blood vessels in the brain/cerebral malaria.
- An accumulation of fluids in the lungs that cause breathing difficulties/problems- pulmonary edema.
